Why You Should Think About Windows and Window Treatments Together

Let’s get straight to the point: if you’re planning your dream home, you need to think about your windows and window treatments as a pair that works best together. It’s like a well-matched set of shoes and an outfit – individually great, but together? Perfect harmony!

Don’t be that person who finishes building their house, installs the windows, and then calls in the window treatment expert, only to find out you’re trying to fit a square peg into a round hole.

Imagine attempting to install shutters on a louvre window – definitely not a match made in design heaven!

So, let’s chat about what window treatments work best with different windows and doors. Here’s the lowdown from The Maybe Forever.

Curtains: Pretty and Practical

First up, we have my favorite – curtains! These lovely pieces of fabric are not just visually appealing; they also bring that much-needed practicality to a room. Plus, they add the final touch that says, “Welcome home!” Curtains generally pair well with most window styles and door types – except for those pesky inward-hinging doors (looking at you, bifolds). Who wants a curtain tangling with a door every time it swings open?

At The Maybe Forever, we’ve draped these beauties over awning windows in the bedrooms, casement windows in the master, and even louvre windows in the office. They bring warmth and personality to the space while helping to block out the sun when I want to enjoy a lazy Sunday. We also included timber pelmets so the tracks appear recessed in the living areas, whereas in the office, we wanted them to feature with the black tracks.

Blinds: Versatile and Affordable (Until They’re Not)

Next on the list are blinds – those versatile wonders that can fit any budget. You can find budget-friendly options or splurge on the high-end ones that come with all the bells and whistles. But let’s be honest, blinds are more about the installation than the price tag.

You need to decide whether you want them installed within the window reveal or face-fitted. Think of it like choosing between a tailored suit or a loose-fitting outfit; the fit can make all the difference!

At The Maybe Forever, we went for Luxaflex® automated Duette® Shades in all four of my sons’ rooms. In two of their rooms, we needed them snugly fitted within the reveal to avoid interfering with the wardrobe function and the pop-up desk. In the other bedrooms, we didn’t have to worry about that, so we opted for ceiling fit. No accidental clashes with the functionality of the room – because nobody wants a wardrobe competing with the blinds.

Shutters: Plan or Be Prepared for Chaos

Ah, shutters—the stylish choice for window treatments! These need some serious planning. If you want your shutters to look fabulous, you need to think ahead about how they fit into your overall design. Remember, shutters look best when they’re installed into the reveal. That way, they create a seamless look that enhances your windows rather than fighting against them.

At The Maybe Forever, we installed shutters in the kitchen and pantry with an awning window—right in the reveal. It’s a cohesive look that adds to the aesthetic of the space.
