Hip Roof
Definition:
A hip roof/hipped roof, is a type of roof where all sides slope downwards to the walls.
Simone’s words:
In layman’s terms, they are shaped like a pyramid on top of a house (there are definitely no technical terms here). I like that, more often than not, you will be able to create drama with the ceiling internally with a pitched roof – check out the master bedroom in The Maybe Forever to see what I mean!

Hip Capping
Definition:
A fitting covering the roof hip to provide an effective watertight barrier, as well as an aesthetic finish to the cut ends of sheets or tiles at hip lines.
Simone’s words:
The finishing capping that covers the cuts to the tiles on a hip roof is like the border for the tiles (well, that makes sense to me)!

Roof Tiles
Definition:
Designed to keep out rain, and are traditionally made from locally available materials such as terracotta or slate. Modern materials such as concrete are used more common today.
Simone’s words:
A material for the roof that is not as popular these days. For the right style house, roof tiles can truly become the feature – just look at our house, The Maybe Forever, if you need proof!

Gutter
Definition:
A gutter is a pipe or trough along the edge of a roof that carries rainwater away from a building.
Simone’s words:
The material that runs horizontally under the roof materials. My fav is the half-round profile.

Eave
Definition:
The edges of the roof which overhang the face of a wall and normally project beyond the side of a building.
Simone’s words:
The underside of the roof that overhangs the building, or in simpler terms, you could call it the ceiling material for the outdoors. You can generally choose between a plain material or lining boards – I love lining boards on coastal homes!

Eave
Definition:
The edges of the roof which overhang the face of a wall and normally project beyond the side of a building.
Simone’s words:
The underside of the roof that overhangs the building, or in simpler terms, you could call it the ceiling material for the outdoors. You can generally choose between a plain material or lining boards – I love lining boards on coastal homes!

Exposed Rafter
Definition:
A rafter is a structural component that is used as part of roof construction. When a rafter is exposed, the rafter tails are the exterior portion of a building’s wood structural truss that projects beyond the perimeter wall of the structure.
Simone’s words:
When you see the end of the timbers exposed over the eaves, I like to use them in coastal homes as they add more character. Just make sure if you want to use exposed eaves that you are not in a bush zone area as they are not always permitted.

Beam
Definition:
A beam is a form of structure used in construction and engineering to create a safe and efficient load route that properly distributes weight across a building’s base.
Simone’s words:
Pretty stock standard explanation for this one, the horizontal material (usually timber or steel) that supports the weight of the house and/or an opening.

Definition:
A post is a primary vertical or leaning support in a structure.
