If you’re new to the world of timber veneers, you’re not alone. As an interior designer, I get asked this all the time! Put simply, timber veneer is a material where a thin slice of real wood is adhered to a core board. Sure, there’s a more technical answer, but I think my version gets to the heart of it.
So, Is It Real Wood?
Yes, timber veneer is absolutely real wood – just the top layer. But don’t confuse it with timber laminate. Timber laminate is actually plastic crafted to look like wood, which gives a totally different feel. Keep this distinction in mind when you’re choosing finishes, especially if you’re after the authentic warmth of natural wood.
Why Choose Timber Veneer Over Solid Wood?
Using a veneer comes with some great perks. For starters, it’s more affordable than solid wood and lighter, making it easier to work with in design and installation. At The Maybe Forever, we went with ArmourCab in Spotted Gum by Big River Group, which offers all the beauty of real timber but with an easier price point and weight for cabinetry and joinery applications.
The Downsides?
The veneer’s thin layer can make repairs tricky. And if you love the raw texture of solid wood, a veneer won’t quite match it. Still, a high-quality veneer, like ArmourCab, brings a lot to the table.
The Maybe Forever’s Choice: ArmourCab in Spotted Gum
We chose ArmourCab in Spotted Gum for our kitchen, butler’s pantry, and office for a few reasons.
ArmourCab brings a dramatic touch – each sheet has unique natural grain and color, perfect for the Bahamas-inspired vibe of TMF.
The Spotted Gum finish also adds a classic, timeless quality that pairs beautifully with our overall aesthetic.
Here’s what makes ArmourCab stand out:
- Australian-Made: Sourced from native species, this veneer is crafted in Grafton, Australia.
- Moisture Resistant Core: Each panel has a 16mm MDF core, making it durable and suitable for cabinetry.
- Flexible Timber Options: In addition to Spotted Gum, it’s also available in Blackbutt and Hoop Pine finishes, each with its own unique beauty.
- Uncoated for Custom Finishes: ArmourCab comes uncoated, allowing you to choose a custom finish to bring out the best in each space.
Mixing It Up with Master Oak
For the laundry and master robe, we used Master Oak in White (a timber laminate), a product that mimics real oak but has all the practical benefits of high-performance technology. With scratch, stain, and color resistance, Master Oak is perfect for high-traffic, high-moisture spaces like our laundry. Big River Group’s Timber Touch Technology also gives Master Oak a deeply textured finish that looks and feels like real oak – ideal for cabinetry, shelving, and more.
The takeaway?
Timber veneer like ArmbourCab, offers an incredible balance of beauty, performance, and versatility. Whether you’re after the timeless appeal of natural wood or a sustainable, low-maintenance alternative like Master Oak, timber veneers are a smart choice.
