Bathrooms: The Next Big Luxury

Gone are the days when a bathroom was purely for purpose.

What was once a sanctuary left for day spas and hotels, today, bathrooms are very much a key element in our home’s design. A space deliberately curated to relax, unwind and offer that little bit of luxury, much like interior style itself, what that luxury looks like comes down to a matter of interpretation.

For me? Minimalism is key to finding that perfect balance between beauty and practicality.

Simple silhouettes and neutral tones can be, both, soothing and luxurious, and make for an easy base to build your own personal serenity around. Stone bench tops, a subtle feature tapware and hints of organic, earthy textures are my ideal foundations, complete with well-planned lighting – both natural and feature.

A freestanding bath.

When done properly, this adds a real ‘wow’ factor into any space. Just make sure you have the room to do it. There’s nothing luxe about a cramped room, so, as a minimum, we always leave 150mm – 200mm around the bath to ensure ease of cleaning.

Feature lighting.

A wall light or pendant is a great way to create impact in a space and make it day spa-esque.  Check with your electrician as to where you’re able to install lighting, as the wet areas can be a little tricky.

For example, you can’t install a working pendant over a bath, but you can install a wall light with low voltage next to your bath (check out The MAYBE Forever master ensuite).  Similarly, a wall light next to your mirror is both a great feature and a great practical way to light in a bathroom.

Greenery.

I’m a big believer that every bathroom needs a plant.  Bringing the outdoors in creates a real synergy; one that balances the mind and body, so even a simple pot plant in the corner is a great way to add that luxe feel.  Just make sure the plant you use is suitable for a bathroom and reflects the environment it needs to thrive. I, personally, like a Peace Lily (or spathiphyllum) in the ‘Squeeze’ Indoor Pot from Balcony Garden

Artwork.

If you’ve followed my journey long enough, you’ll know how much I love artwork in a bathroom.  It, not only, enhances the space, but sets the tone to really reflect the sense of luxury you’re trying to achieve. One of my favourites for a coastal home, is the Salt Seas canvas by Blacklist Studio

Towels:

Whilst the space itself is important, adding in those luxury bathroom accessories, like towels, is a key factor to achieving your little piece of heaven. Invest in a quality set of bath towels. Quality makes all the difference. When left on display, they add to the whole look of the room.  And when you use them, they add to the experience. My favourite ‘splurge’ towel at the moment is the Linen towels by Cultiver in Natural. But also, if you want to add some colour or pattern, look for this in your towels.
